Edo North Youths have continued to protest despite the announcement of an imposed curfew by the state governor, H.E. Governor Godwin Obaseki.

The youths who began protesting on Monday at Jattu Junction in Auchi to lend their voices to the ongoing calls for reforms all over the country were again seen at their protest venue on Tuesday demanding for an end to police brutality amongst others despite losing a member to death in the hands of men of the Nigerian Army who shot sporadically at angry unarmed protesters leaving many injured in the process.

They demanded justice for the dead and called on government to ensure that the killer is brought to book while encouraging aggrieved members to desist from taking laws into their hands in the cause of the protest.

Speaking on the issue, a comrade identified simply as Timaya explained that the action taken by the soldiers who shot at protesters was uncalled for as protesters were not wielding arms and have not resorted to violence when the men in uniforms approached at the scene. He expressed disappointment at the gross display of unprofessionalism and called on the Edo state government to ensure that justice is served.

We were just here when they came and opened fire at us. People had to run for their dear lives but I was on ground calling on the men to stop exercising brutal force as it was a wrong thing to do. Two of our protesters were badly wounded and feared dead but just one gave up the ghost. Others were left with minor injuries too and it is quite unfortunate. We have however taken the dead guy to the mortuary and communicated his family in Otuo.” He said.

Comrades at the venue of the protests under the aegis of Coalition of Edo North Youths for Good Governance appealed to General Muhammadu Buhari, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to do all within his powers to fish out the Soldier that killed Comrade Iraoya for no just cause. They also appreciated God for the survival of the other young man who many feared was dead for sustaining a gun wound in his abdominal region from the soldiers that invaded the protest ground.

Protesters took out time to tell their stories of ugly encounters with the disbanded SARS and other police operatives and expressed dismay at how things have degenerated from bad to worse in the country. High point of Tuesday’s protest was when Muslim Faithfuls offered the Zhur prayer at the protest ground at about 2pm while their Christian brothers flanked around them as protectors.
