A 24hour curfew has been imposed by the Executive Governor of Edo state, Governor Godwin Obaseki indefinitely over protests that have taken destructive dimensions.

This was announced on Monday in view of raging security concerns in the cause of endsars protests in Edo State capital city of Benin. Many cases of vandalism and arson have so far been reported with the most recent being the Breaking of Oko Prison and setting free of inmates by Protesters.

The Secretary to the state Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq disclosed that though the citizens have rights and freedom of expression to the extent of making certain demands through protests, the Government will not take likely breach of peace by thugs in the guise of protests.

“This decision has become necessary because of the very disturbing incidents of vandalism and attacks on private individuals and institutions by hoodlums in the guise of #endSARS protesters.

While the government of Edo state respects the rights of its citizens to undertake legitimate protests, it cannot sit idly when hoodlums have taken laws into their hands to cause mayhem on innocent citizens and the state.” He said.

Schools and other businesses have also been advised to shutdown operations in the cause of the imposed curfew till further notice pending when all grey areas are looked into and resolved.

Additionally, the management of Auchi Polytechnic has advised all her staff to close by 3pm on Monday in view of the seeming breakdown of law and order in the state. In a circular dated  Monday 19th 2020 and signed by Dr. G.E. Ihiokhan the Registrar, management has announced the vacation of all academic/official activities on campus pending when the curfew is lifted. Staff are advised to remain calm and remain safe as their life and safety remains management’s concern.

In another development, it has been reported that a clash between men of the Nigerian Army and civilians at Jattu Junction where protesters have been gathered since the early hours of Monday. The squabble is said to have led to shootouts at civilians by Soldiers.

Those involved are yet to be identified and it is quite unclear what led to the squabble that ensued at the protest ground.
